You might be here if...

Something happened — or many things happened — and your nervous system never quite recovered.

Maybe it was a single event that changed everything. Maybe it was years of chronic stress, emotional neglect, or feeling unsafe. You've tried to move past it. You've told yourself it's over. But your body didn't get the message. The memories still feel raw. Certain situations, sounds, or words trigger reactions that feel out of proportion. You're exhausted from fighting your own mind.

That's not weakness. That's trauma — and it's stored in the brain in a way that talk therapy alone sometimes can't reach.

  • Intrusive thoughts or memories that surface without warning

  • Flashbacks, nightmares, or emotional reactions that feel out of your control

  • Anxiety or hypervigilance that doesn't go away, even when you're safe

  • Grief that feels impossible to process or move through

  • Shame, guilt, or a persistent sense that something is wrong with you

  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations connected to a past experience

  • A feeling of being emotionally stuck, despite years of trying to heal

EMDR doesn't ask you to relive every detail of what happened. It works with the way your brain stores painful memories — and helps it finish what it couldn't process at the time.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is one of the most extensively researched trauma treatments available — endorsed by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

When we experience something traumatic or deeply distressing, the brain sometimes fails to process it the way it does ordinary memories. The experience gets "stuck" — stored with the original emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs intact. Years later, anything that resembles that experience can trigger the same response, even when you're no longer in danger.

EMDR uses a structured process — including bilateral stimulation such as guided eye movements — to help the brain reprocess those stuck memories. Over time, the memory loses its emotional charge. It becomes something that happened, rather than something that is still happening.

How EMDR therapy works

Phase 1–2: History & Preparation
We begin by understanding your history, identifying the experiences to address, and building the coping tools you'll need to feel safe and grounded throughout the process. There is no pressure to move faster than you're ready.

Phase 3–6: Processing
We identify specific memories, the beliefs connected to them, and the physical sensations they bring up. Using bilateral stimulation, we work to desensitize the memory and replace distorted beliefs with more adaptive ones. Many clients notice a significant shift within just a few sessions.

About Roman Lockshin, LMHC

My path to this work was shaped by my own experience of getting stuck — and eventually finding a way through.

I trained as a concert violinist at the Manhattan School of Music before spending years in finance as a Chartered Financial Analyst on Wall Street. Along the way, I navigated addiction, burnout, and the kind of pain that doesn't show up on a resume. Those experiences gave me a deep understanding of what it means to be high-functioning on the outside while struggling internally — and what it actually takes to change.

I use EMDR alongside CBT and logotherapy, always tailored to where you are and what you're carrying. I work with individuals and couples, including older adults navigating grief and life transitions, and clients from the Russian-speaking communities of Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach.

EMDR therapy in person or via telehealth

EMDR is highly effective in both formats. In-person sessions take place at our Fort Lauderdale office at 2699 Stirling Road, Suite C403A. Telehealth sessions are available to clients anywhere in Florida via a secure, confidential platform.

Both options are covered by the same insurance plans. If you're unsure which format is right for you, we can talk through it in your free consultation.

Ready to stop carrying this alone?

EMDR doesn't require you to have all the words for what happened. It just requires you to show up. A free 20-minute consultation is the first step — no pressure, no commitment.
